What’s black and white and carried all over town? Not a nun in a parade…
Considering how trendy it is, I’m surprised more retailers aren’t offering reusable shopping bags for customers. I’m not talking about the high-end grocers that charge you $15 to buy a “sustainable” bag that lets you walk around town advertising for them. I’m talking about the every day sort of store that cares about the amount of plastic they spread around the planet.
Well, here’s a BYOB idea every store can fly with: Handmade Expressions (whose motto is “Fair trade = justice + peace + love”) has cool grocery bags that measure 12”x16” and are made of several layers of used newspaper and sturdy cardboard. They’re inexpensive and customizable. Best of all, they save new paper from being produced by using paper that would otherwise go into a trash bin.And they’re totally affordable. At 60 cents a bag, now even Mom & Pops can get you to walk around town advertising for them.
Note: Handmade Expressions has increased the price of the bag to 75 cents a bag. This has been implemented to be able to ship the bags faster now that many are being ordered.
This is a Paper Bag

Here’s an idea for eco-retailers, especially those who can’t rely on their customers to always BYOB (which is to say, all of them). Measuring 12×16 inches, these paper carriers are made from several layers of used newspaper, along with sturdy cardboard bases, so no new paper is used in the process.
Each bag costs 50 cents, with a minimum order of 50 bags. You can even customize the bags with your store’s logo for an extra 10 cents per bag, although you’ll need to order a minimum of 500 bags to begin with.
Comment on the post:
Wow, those are really cool. I’m no expert on bag prices, so I’m not sure about costliness, but those could be an awesome marketing opportunity. If you’re the only store in town with newspaper bags, every time someone saw one they would know it was from your store. Not to mention, you could at least call yourself eco-friendly, too.
